Trixeo Aerosphere Inhaler Reformulated for A Cleaner Future

June 4, 2025

As part of global efforts to protect the environment, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is playing a role by supporting changes to inhalers used by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. These changes help lower carbon emissions, contributing to a cleaner and safer environment.

The second most common cause of emergency hospital admissions is COPD, there are around 1.2 million people suffering from COPD in the UK. The new inhaler version has replaced the older propellent with a more environmentally friendly alternative called HFO-1234ze(E) with nearly zero global warming potential., but with the same safety & effectiveness of previous version. Trixeo Aerosphere helps in managing symptoms like shortness of breath, wheezing and cough that COPD patients regularly experience.

Julian Beach from the MHRA affirmed that patient safety remains a priority, and the recent approval allows continued access to effective COPD treatment while reducing carbon emissions.

Minister Karin Smyth added that this step supports the UK’s goal of offering eco-friendly medicines and cutting the NHS’s carbon footprint on the path to Net Zero.

Trixeo Aerosphere, taken twice daily (two puffs morning and evening), remains unchanged in dose and active ingredients. The MHRA approved its new, eco-friendlier propellant—HFO-1234ze(E)—after confirming it delivers the same effectiveness and quality.

Side effects remain the same and can be found in the updated Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) or SmPC once available. The MHRA will continue to monitor its safety, and any side effects can be reported via the Yellow Card scheme or app.
